Bundesliga, relegation: Hertha and the HSV in check
The last duels are a while ago. In the 2017/18 season, Hertha won both matches 2: 1. Karim Rekik and Niklas Stark met at the home game in October 2017 (HSV goal: ARP). The second leg in Hamburg in mid-March 2018 was the debut of the then HSV coach Christian Titz. The hosts took the lead through Douglas Santos, Valentino Lazaro and Joker Salomon Kalou turned the game.
It was the last season of both clubs in the same division. And for the time being. The 18th and last Bundesliga ticket for the 2022/23 season is awarded in the relegation duel, the first part of which takes place on Thursday evening in the fully occupied Berlin Olympic Stadium. The coach takes a close look at the rivals.
The initial situation
Hertha awarded three match balls in a row - and that after the victories in Augsburg (1-0) and against Stuttgart (2: 0) almost safely believed to rescue on the home stretch of the regular season in Bielefeld (1: 1), against Mainz ( 1: 2) and played in Dortmund (1: 2). After the final whistle in Dortmund and the late victory of the Stuttgart against Cologne, the professionals were in shock.
Trainer Felix Magath, in the weeks before as a reminder and Warner in action, has been preaching confidence since then. On Tuesday we went to the training camp in the Brandenburg Kienbaum east of Berlin. On Wednesday, Magath said with a view to the opponent HSV: "Objectively, it is the case that we played in the better league. That is why we should also be able to play better." On the HSV and the approach of his coach Tim Walter, he believes that he is well prepared: **** "Walter has a game idea, he knows how he wants to play. But it is known for longer and it does not change. That is why it is not changing For us and me it is clear how the HSV appears. So you can prepare well. "
**** In the seclusion of Kienbaum, in the Olympic and Paralympic training center, Magath prepares his team for the relegation first leg: "We also selected the sports school because the winners come here".
The HSV wrote history in the past few weeks-as the first club that has caught up in 3rd place within the last five games since the introduction of the three-point rule. "The momentum," says coach Walter, "is on our side." This is more than an attempt to radiate optimism, it is lived confidence in the second division club. "We are on top, can play freely and be really in the mood," emphasizes captain Sebastian Schonlau. "I hope you see that too."
In addition to the plus point to start the relegation with five wins in a row, another aspect could also be advantageous: since the relegation 2018, the HSV has had a hard time with the load of the favorites. It is about the dream destination of the Bundesliga, the paralyzing feeling of everyday second division life, to lose something, but has changed the pages. "Hertha," knows Schonlau, "definitely has something to lose, we only have something to win. We can create something great that would be incredible for the city and the club."
the trainers
Felix Magath, smiled by many during his comeback in March after nine and a half years of the Bundesliga break, his skeptic lies punished. He got the team out of their lethargy and gave their stability and orientation. He has repeatedly installed the courage for surprising personal details and at the same time an axis - which has been missing for a long time. The 68-year-old has never relegated from the Bundesliga, he wants to preserve this nimbus against the HSV, "his" HSV.
As a player, he rose to legend in Hamburg: three times German champion (1979, 1982, 1983), European Cup winner (1977), European Cup winner of the national champions (1983) with him as a shooter of the Golden Gate in the final against Juventus. After the end of the player career, he inherited Günter Netzer in 1986 as HSV manager, later he was a coach of the U23, assistant coach with the professionals under Benno Möhlmann and finally head coach (October 1995 to May 1997).
Hertha against the HSV - that is also the duel between Magath's present and his past. One thing is clear: After the two relegation games, it is over in Berlin. The club is looking for a long-term solution. And Magath? Has no pressure, but still desire for being a trainer.
Tim Walter is well known from Magath from joint café visits to the Munich Wahlheimat. The 46-year-old Badener appreciates the master maker as "great trainer and people". And he knows: "He has a lot ahead of us in terms of experience."
Complex, that much is certain, Walter will still not get any before the duel with Magath. He preaches courage in Hamburg from the first day and also lives in front of him. In his way of playing, in his appearance. If he says that the HSV has an identity again, it could be interpreted as a praise.
It is attached at this point and is returned by the leaders. The constant search for the playful solution from the back looks risky and has also led to the chances of the opponents and goals against top teams such as Schalke and Werder or in the trophy against Cologne and Freiburg, goalkeeper Daniel Heuer says: "We have a clear plan And feel good with this. "
In addition: Walter has changed the mentality. The fact that his professionals in the robe of the indomitable people are very important to their boss. "That," explains Schonlau, "the coach has a huge part, he funizes us every day".
The staff
Hertha's midfield clearer Santiago Ascacibar (yellow lock) is missing in the first leg. Exhangers Davie Selke and central defender Marton Dardai (both muscular problems in the thigh) are also canceled, as are Lukas Klünter, Kelian Nsona, Dong-Jun Lee and Alexander Schwolow, who had been missing for a long time.
It is reportedly not enough for Marcel Lotka, who secured position as number 1 in Schwolow's absence. The blessing, which he suffered in Dortmund in a rescue operation (nasal broken nasal broken and slight concussion), does not allow an assignment in the home game.
In addition to Tim Leibold (cruciate ligament rupture), which has been injured since October, Anssi Suhonen is the only failure at HSV. One who weighs heavily because the Finn was an invigorating element as a climber of last weeks of the season.
the strengths
Hertha, under Magath predecessor Tayfun Korkut, temporarily a shooting gallery (71 seasonal gates), has defensively consolidated. Routine like captain Dedryck Boyata and left-back Marvin Plattenhardt recently came close to their top form, including club record shopping Lucas Tousart found their way under the third coach of the season.

Magath has reduced the susceptibility to opposing standards, increased the dangerousness in its own resting balls and significantly screwed up the mileage of the team. Hertha's game now has more intensity, stability and structure.
Mentality has become the characteristic of an HSV team, whose predecessor squad has failed primarily. "We never give up, no matter what happens," says Schonlau. This approach was not only crucial for catching up, but also for eight points, for example, by a total of five last minute goals. In addition, which sounds like a contradiction to the risky game system, defensive stability. With 35 goals conceded, the HSV conceded very few in the 2nd division.
The weaknesses
Hertha's offensive game lacks force, creativity and pace. After all: top goal scorer Stevan Jovetic (six season hits) came to a short comeback in Dortmund after a month break due to a muscle fiber tear. With him in the field Hertha has more sophistication and goal. In addition, the question arises of the nervous stability of the season mentally enormously claimed by a turbulent season and the late slip in 16th place.
On the other hand, the suhon failure tears a hole in Walter's offensive processes. The 21-year-old Finn is missing as a flywheel in the aft position and could not be replaced equally in the final 3-2 in Rostock by Sonny Kittel. This in turn was missing on the left wing, where right -back Josha Vagnoman strangers despite his power and Faride Alidou has been completely immersed in Frankfurt since his established movement.
the relegation experience
Relegation and Hertha - that went wrong in 2012. The Berliners failed with coach Otto Rehhagel under scandalous circumstances to second division Fortuna Düsseldorf (1: 2, 2: 2). The second leg in Düsseldorf was overshadowed by Pyros, a place storm of the Düsseldorf fans, a long interruption by referee Wolfgang Stark, the late continuation and tumulties after the final whistle.
The game went to the extension before the DFB sports court and the DFB Federal Court, Hertha's protest against the game rating was dismissed. Several professionals were blocked, Levan Kobiashvili (Rehhagel: "The fairest player since World War II") for a supposed attack against referee Stark even until the end of December 2012.

Twice, 2014 and 2015, the HSV already survived the relegation, but at the time as a Bundesliga club. Against Fürth (0: 0, 1: 1), the European Cup arithmetics, which was still applied at that time, helped the KSC a controversial free-kick whistle a year later. Back then, the only current HSV professional with relegation experience: Jonas Meffert was the only current HSV professional. The defense campaign of the then Karlsruher was seen by referee Manuel Gräfe as a handball, the due free kick led to 1-1 in added time and to extend, in which Hamburg finally won 2: 1. Meffert gained another unpleasant relegation experience last year, and with Holstein Kiel also lost the duel of the second division third to the Bundesliga sixteenth (1: 0, 1: 5).
